One of the coolest things about working Bumbershoot was actually being on the grounds of Seattle Center the entire week preceding the Festival, watching everything get built and come together, while helping a little bit (a really little bit). This meant I got to step outside of my role as a spindly blogger and start to toughen up and help people move boxes and build things. Obviously this was quite a departure for me.
So I frequented “the Pav” (the SC Pavilion, which would soon become the site of my downfall, followed by my greatest triumph of the weekend) to pick up tools, supplies, and sometimes lunch, because that’s where Festival people keep those types of things. While I was checking out a roll of industrial tape from Carlin the Tool Guy, I started thinking that everything you could pick up from him for building stages and stuff was kind of… sinister. Like, I could have checked out a roll of duct tape, some rope, a hacksaw, and a power drill. All I needed was a late ‘80s model brown van with blacked out windows and I would’ve been straight up serial killer material.
But I had fun pretending to be “Production,” at least for the week. During the Festival, I was outfitted with a radio, complete with the little handset speaker attached to my shoulder via a camouflage bandana that someone left in my apartment one time. One of my friends remarked that with my camo and my radio, I came off less like a desk worker and more like a character from Tank Girl (presumably minus the questionable goggles). Which is fine with me, honestly, because that’s a lot cooler than I normally look.
So thanks, Bumbershoot, for letting me man up for the week.
