Unearth, Beneath The Earth
Let me get something out of the way early on: I worked myself silly at Bumbershoot, but I still got to see music. There was no way I was going to stay cooped up in the press room for three days while a bunch of amazing artists did their respective thangs within walking distance of me. That was just not going to happen.
That being said, after missing The Fall of Troy’s characteristically blistering set at the Ex Hall in order to go get food (stupid decision, I know), I was in low spirits. It was only Day One, and I was already missing out on cool stuff. This could not happen. I had to make a stand then and there, and determine the direction of my weekend: was I going to sit at a desk, or was I going to rock? Well, for those of you who saw me around the grounds getting my groove on at later shows (Chk Chk Chk, anyone? Groove-tastic), you know what choice I made.
So my next move was to wait for the next Exhibition Hall show, which happened to be Unearth, easily one of the heaviest bands at the Festival. But I wasn’t going to go into the show through the doors, or wait in line. No, I chose to go in through backstage, to fully take advantage of my Bumbershoot association while it lasted. This involved me walking past the building, heading down a long trail, and actually walking underneath McCaw Hall through some crazy loading entrance. I was in some strange concrete cavern, as I started to hear the punishing metal of Unearth, while I was actually under the Earth. I think they would have liked that. I certainly did. If you’ve never heard heavy metal inside of an underground tunnel before, I highly recommend it. But the next best thing is the appropriate dark cavern of the Ex Hall, where I watched Unearth finish their set. So thank you, Unearth, for giving me good reason to fully appreciate/exploit my internship. You are the metalcore band that keeps on giving.
