For Years Blue Wins '07 Sound Off! Competition

On a night filled with choreographed dance moves, songs about facial hair, and a band dressed in ski outfits, one group rose to the top to be named winner of the 2007 SoundOff! Competition and claim a spot on Bumbershoot’s 2007 roster. This year’s winner is For Years Blue, a progressive septet featuring violins and an abundance of electronic flourishes.

The band is singer/guitarist Erik White (18), guitarist Kyle Musselwhite (18), Cole Tanner (18) on bass, Sean McCotter (17) on keys, guitarist Mac Smith (17), violinist Phil Pintor (17), and drummer Marcus Ourada (20). We caught up with them on their way back to eastern Washington to ask them about their band name, the Spokane music scene, and of course, Bumbershoot.

Congrats on winning this year’s EMP’s Soundoff! Competition, a spot on the Bumbershoot lineup, and a boatload of other prizes. Does this mean you’ll be changing the band name to something a little less “blue?”

We’ve been debating a name change, but we don’t really know what we’re gonna pick yet. The name was just something we kinda pulled out of the air freshman year, but we’ve grown a lot since we first started. I think it would be a good time to change our name and reemerge as something different because our sound is so much different now.

Who are some of your musical influences?

We all have our own, but I think that some of the big ones are definitely Radiohead, Built to Spill, Autolux, The Arcade Fire, Wilco… just basically all the music we listen to. We’re influenced by a lot of bands so hints of each one tend to show up in our sound.

So I understand you’re on your way back to Spokane. How is the music scene over there?

Spokane’s not that bad. The biggest problem with Spokane is its all-ages venues. There’s a big lack of all-ages venues. There’s a lot a good music in Spokane, it’s just the people over there don’t really support it as much.

So does this mean you guys will be moving to Seattle anytime soon?

We are debating. We’ve thought a lot about moving to Seattle and if we continue on this next year I think that’s what we’re going to do. So far from what we’ve seen Seattle would be a much better venue for us.

What else is the band looking to accomplish in the coming months?

We’re just trying to play as much as we can and make more relationships with bands. We’re trying to come over to Seattle and play more shows and write new songs and just keep going. Right now we’re just rolling with the punches.

Seeing as you guys live on the other side of the state, have you been able to make it out to any Bumbershoots?

Some of the members in the band have gone, but I haven’t been to one yet. I wanted to go last year because I wanted to see Deerhoof.

Now that you guys are the first confirmed band playing the Festival, what band would you want to share the bill with?

Well, I’d love to play with Wilco because they’re my favorite band. But I think that we’d love to play with any band that influences us. We’re just really excited to and we’re just kind of on cloud nine about it. We can’t believe we’re getting this opportunity. We’re stoked!
