06.29.2009 Download: "Only as the Day is Long" by Sera Cahoone
This track from country-folk-indie darling Sera Cahoone is from her album with the same name, Only As the Day is Long. The Seattleite (by way of Colorado) offers heart-tugging lyrics and just the right amount of banjo and harmonica to give the track some twang. This is the kind of country for people who say they don’t listen to country.

Jazzy trumpet and keys accompany numerous instruments and conscience lyrics on this live version of “Footprints” from Seattle based hip-hop group Dyno Jamz. The youthful eight-member group skillfully uses their instruments and offers live performances that are rich with textured sound. This empowering track attests to the band’s talent and reason for winning the 2009 Sound-Off!, Experience Music Project’s Battle of the Bands.

06.15.2009 Download: "Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh" by Say Hi
On the latest Say Hi album, The Ooh’s and Ah’s, Eric Elbogen shies away from usual repertoire of vampires and science fiction for more grounded tales of unrequited love. This track, “Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh” starts off with trumpet, maracas and light tapping of cymbals skipping into uppity guitar and lustfully descriptive lyrics.

With lyricist/poet John Roderick at the helm, Seattle’s The Long Winters have been putting out stellar records for a few years now. Their newest won’t be out until later this year (now that John’s on deadline), so for now you can tide yourself over with a gem from the band’s third and most recent album, Putting the Days to Bed.

05.11.2009 Download: "Life is Looking Up" by Forgive Durden performing Razia's Shadow
Forgive Durden performing Razia’s Shadow is musical delight full of mythological plots, characters and settings.
Fueled by insecurities and large ego, an angel’s actions has horrible consequences. This leads into a love story of those who must rectify his mistakes. In “Life is Looking Up” the angel, Ahrima, fantasizes about all he could do for the world and the praise that would follow. His creator’s objection to his ideas sends Ahrima down a path toward destruction.

04.27.2009 Download: "Absence" by Carrie Rodriguez
This track comes from a siren on a confident fiddle giving it a bluegrass touch. Sorrowful lyrics about longing to release a loved one, lead into a confirming chorus statement of realized independence. Like an original country song, it’s a story sung with strong vocals and up-beat strings.

08.29.2008 Download: "Escape City Scrapers" By Mono In VCF
This is some highly enjoyable dark pop from Tacoma (Fun fact: before this band existed, that sentence had probably never been typed before.) The song borders on sultry lounge music once the vocals start in, and then with the addition of strings, it became my favorite dark-orchestral-lounge-pop song EVER.

What more could I possibly say about Neko Case, beyond the fact that she’s simply amazing? It’s got a synth-heavy beat. It’s got a falsetto hook. It’s called “I Ate Your Soul.” And it features someone named P Smoov. Based on those facts, this is my favorite song ever.
