09.08.2008 I Met My Man-Crush!

Part of my job at Bumbershoot was to be a stage escort for the out-of-the-way sanctuary of softness that was the Wells Fargo Stage in the Northwest Court. It was very nice to head out there every now and then, make sure everything was working out well (since I would totally be able to fix any problem going on, and not just frantically yell into my radio and wave my arms like a maniac at the slightest hint of trouble) and enjoy some relaxing jams by the likes of Final Fantasy (who was absolutely mesmerizing!), Arthur & Yu, and of course, my man-crush, Sondre Lerche.

09.08.2008 The Saga Of Monday

The Saga of Monday, Part 1: Death Cab For Cutie

So, Bumberlings, our beloved Festival has been laid to slumber for another 11 1/2 months until its triumphant return in 2009. I hope everyone had as much fun as I did, which was a metric ton. I measured. Please don’t ask me how precisely to measure fun; just know it is hard to do.

I thought Death Cab For Cutie’s set Monday night was the perfect closure for the Festival, with their epic, album closing title-track “Transatlanticism,” complete with a waterfall pyro display. It was great to sit in the bleachers with my friends and see what I’ve been working for all summer and, as fun as it was, to know I was finally done.

Unfortunately at this point I had to go back to work, and remain at Seattle Center until 3 AM. While DCFC may have been a fitting end for most of you in attendance, my night was only just beginning. Its tale is one of hardships, mystery, and triumph of the human spirit. I beseech you to read on, and tell my story! My voice must be heard!

09.08.2008 Honorary Member Of Production

One of the coolest things about working Bumbershoot was actually being on the grounds of Seattle Center the entire week preceding the Festival, watching everything get built and come together, while helping a little bit (a really little bit). This meant I got to step outside of my role as a spindly blogger and start to toughen up and help people move boxes and build things. Obviously this was quite a departure for me.

08.28.2008 The Olympian Interviews Evan The Intern

Those fine, fine folks over at The Olympian have been reading my blog and decided to interview me! So now I’m writing about them writing about my writing. That’s so meta.

07.30.2008 Ask Evan: Bumbershoot's Literary Arts

Q: Hey Evan, I’m coming to Bumbershoot (so stoked for !!!(!)), but I also want to check out some of the authors. Any suggestions?

Authors, you say? So you want to check out the “lit-arts” at Bumbershoot, but you don’t exactly follow what I call “the book scene.” That’s fine, I get it. You’re hovering somewhere between the being-able-to-read crowd and the reviewing-books-for-The-New-Yorker crowd. I’m in the same boat. Luckily you have me to guide you to the authors of Bumbershoot.

07.23.2008 Ask Evan: "How do you pick the artists for Bumbershoot?"

Well first of all, I’m very flattered that you think I, Evan the Intern, am picking the artists for Bumbershoot. I wish I could take credit for getting Anti-Flag and Sondre Lerche on the same bill, but that’s just not the case.

07.17.2008 Win Your Way into Bumbershoot

Right now at Bumbershoot, we have eight contests going on. Yeah, even I was surprised at that number when I just checked it. Of the eight contests, my level of involvement ranges from getting every individual entry in my personal email to notifying winners.

07.17.2008 Whiffle Ball, or How I Stopped Worrying and Learned To Love Interning

I believe being an intern at One Reel is much more fun than interning at your standard run-of-the-mill company. Recently our organization joined an old-school intramural sports league with other Seattle media entities KEXP, Seattle Weekly, and Frog Design. What we do is play stuff like Capture The Flag, Dodgeball and the like for an hour every couple weeks. And, of course, we spend about twice that amount of time trash-talking the other teams around the office before the games. Good times.

06.26.2008 InternView: Sponsorship Department

After the Marketing Department’s InternView, every department wanted a piece of the action. So, in my tradition of not walking very far, I chose sponsorship for the next InternView, since they’re located 8 feet away from my desk.

Amidst my hard-hitting questions I also discovered that the sponsorship department includes: a woman who used to work as a dancer in a Barney Rubble suit, a harpist, a former Cub Scout (who quit after the first year when his pine box racecar was destroyed), an obsessive-compulsive hair-cutter and someone who apparently knows Keith Richards, his mom and his step-dad. Now try and guess who’s who from the rundown:

Gaylynn Kiser: Sponsorship Director
Gretchen DeGroot: Sponsorship Manager
Mike Guay: Marketing and Sponsorship Coordinator
Elin Waldman: Sponsorship Intern
Lauren Simpson: Sponsorship Intern

What does the sponsorship department do?
Elin: I was curious of that as well!
Gaylynn: We get corporate sponsorships for the Festival, which helps keep our ticket prices low and provides cool experiences for fans.
Gretchen: And we help to get the word out about what’s new and upcoming in “product-land.”
Elin: Yes, that IS what we do. I’m also the official cream cheese procurer of Bumbershoot.

If you could work for any other department, which one would it be, and why?
Gretchen: Production because they get stuff done! They’re very action-oriented people.
Mike: Accounting. (Laughter) That was my joke answer from the Marketing InternView.
Gaylynn: I’m citing a conflict of interest because I’m the department head.

Which department could you beat at whiffle ball, and why?
All: Accounting. (Laughter)
Gretchen: We’re fortunate to have Mike on our side; he’s a more sports-oriented fellow.
Mike: I hear Robert (from Information Services) has a nasty knuckle ball with a whiffle ball.
Gaylynn: So, we’ll have to go back to Accounting.

What part of the Festival are you most excited for?
Gretchen: Visual arts, fine arts, the spectacle. There’s a lot of stuff that’s happening throughout the grounds: installations, participatory activities, plus it’s a spectacle with fun guerrilla arts projects that the Programming Department works on. (Note: Programming Department InternView coming soon!)
Gaylynn: It’s just so diverse. I’m excited about the entire event.
Elin: The chaos… I’m excited to experience it all!
Mike: I’m always excited about the music at Bumbershoot, but this year I’m really excited about what’s going on around the International Fountain lawn especially, and the art in the Northwest Court Rooms.
Gretchen: Agreed. I think those will be the “spots to be at” at Bumbershoot.
Lauren: It’s my fifth day here. So far I’m just looking forward to making sure that the sponsors are satisfied, and that people notice all the little things we do to make it such a unique event.

What festival food are you going to gorge on this year?
Gretchen: (immediately) Shishkaberries.
Elin: Corn dogs – but like, real corn dogs, like the crispy good ones, not the microwave ones.
Lauren: Elephant ears.

(Mike then polls the sponsorship on the recent, heated elephant ears VS fry bread debate, and “elephant ears’ is once again championed as the preferred nomenclature. Sorry, Lisa.)

If your department was a professional sports team, what song would play while you walked onto the field?
Mike: Pink Floyd, “Money” (Laughter)
Gaylynn: Good call.

If your department were to start a band, what would you call it, and what would you play?

After the usual amount of deliberation, Lauren is crowned lead singer and the Slingshot Animals are born. Bumbershoot’s famous band bio generator has provided their elaborate history:

Rising from the pits of Austin, Slingshot Animals ruptured onto the metal scene in 2005 with their debut album, Use Your Initiative. The band’s latest album, Signed, Sealed and Delivered, fuses Elle Simpson’s ominous snarls with booming drum solos to forge a solid record chock-full of sludgy anthems. With standout tracks like “Satan’s Footprint,” look for Slingshot Animals to be a major force in the metal landscape for years to come.

Find out how your band bio would read.

06.06.2008 Gaining valuable experience

So, some of you out there in Internetland might be wondering, “How did you become an intern, Evan?” Well, firstly, I would say, call me Mr. Stewart. We’re not yet on a first name basis and you’re making me uncomfortable. I would also find myself wondering how you got my email address to contact me directly, bypassing my secretary completely. Then, I would probably answer your question: It’s taken me just about four years in college, reading things, and then writing things about those things that I have read. I won’t go into the details.

“So with those qualifications,’” you might wonder, “what does an intern do for Bumbershoot?”

05.23.2008 InternView: Evan the Intern

So, for my first installment of “InternView”, when Evan the Intern interviews people (what a clever name, right? I wish I actually came up with it myself)… I’m going to interview myself. I thought it might be nice for people to get a little bit of insight into me and my delicate psyche, especially if they’re going to be reading my blog for the next few months. In the future, I’ll be interviewing people around the office, bands, comedians, and whoever will return my phone calls and emails.

InternView
Subject: Evan Stewart

So Evan, what do you do at Bumbershoot?
E: Sometimes I write about Bumbershoot, our office, the bands playing, or about whatever I’m up to. It’s a sweet gig. I also help manage Bumbershoot’s networking sites like MySpace, Facebook, etc, so if you ever send a friend request or message to one of those, it goes through me. Other than that, just little online odds and ends, that kind of thing.

What has been your previous experience with Bumbershoot?
E: I went for the first time in 2006. Before then, I had no idea how big and awesome it was; I thought it was a little festival with a few bands, almost like a street fair. When I got there it was HUGE and really fun. I saw a bunch of music and comedy, and I spent the whole day running between stages and buildings and food (which was freaking incredible). It was like an entertainment marathon!

What was your favorite part of Bumbershoot 2006?
E: The comedy. There is no better place to steal jokes for online columns than from professional comedians making jokes at a festival. They’ll probably never know.

What are you looking forward to the most about this year’s Bumbershoot?
E: Getting in for free since I work here now. And also Neko Case, she’s amazing. And !!!. And Beck. And Anti-Flag. So many. Don’t make me choose.

You know, Evan, Bumbershoot has more than just music, it has a wide variety of arts as well. If you were going to engage in some performance art-ing, what would it be?
E: I would stand on a stage and put on dozens of t-shirts, one over the other. Racks and racks of t-shirts. Probably about two hundred when I was done. Then, I would have someone roll me offstage. It would be amazing. Otherwise, I’m about as artistic as a sack of potatoes. So I’ll probably stick to writing.

If you had the opportunity to interview anyone else, aside from yourself, who would it be?
E: Well, obviously my first choice was myself since it involves the least talking and leaving my desk. But, if given the option, I would probably interview Beck, since it would be less like an interview and more like some kind of crazy religious experience where I would roam the land thereafter preaching the word of funk. But I do that, to some degree, with nearly every celebrity I come into contact with (but I feel like with Beck it would be even more so).

Well, thanks for taking the time to talk with me, Evan. It was no small feat tracking you down.
E: It was my pleasure, Evan. I’ll see you later at our apartment.
