08.27.2008 Download: "Come Down" By The Valley
This throwback grunge song reminds me of the times when people could wear flannel without a second thought, which would come in handy in this uncharacteristically cold summer. It’s a big fuzzed-out rocker that will definitely get your feet moving and your head banging.
RIYL: Nirvana, Alice In Chains

08.26.2008 Download: "Good Morning" by Grynch
This sounds like something that would play during a montage where someone works really hard and gets good at something, probably boxing (or math). When you combine the sincere vocals with the skilled delivery, you have one good rap song on your hands.
RIYL: Kanye West, TI
08.25.2008 Download: "Dancers at the End of Time" by Howlin Rain
Classic rock, or as a co-worker of mine put it, “rawk.” Seriously, somebody go find these guys and get their time machine. Science needs that thing when Howlin Rain is done with it, to go back in time and find more awesome bands like Howlin Rain, incidentally.
RIYL: Jimi Hendrix, Cream
08.22.2008 Download: "Big Electric Light" By The Tripwires
This song is a nice balance of sweet airy vocal harmonies of ‘60s pop with bouncy guitar work of modern indie rock. Now all I have to do is figure out what the “Big Electric Light” is supposed to be.
RIYL: Beulah, The Beach Boys
08.21.2008 Download: "Back For More" by Hadley Caliman
I can’t listen to this without thinking of those uber-hip spy movies from the ‘60s. This jazzy number is perfect to listen to while you play blackjack in a foreign country. Or if you want to hear a fantastic saxophone solo. Either way, I like it.
RIYL: BlueNote Jazz
08.20.2008 Download: "Hold On, Hold On" By Neko Case
What more could I possibly say about Neko Case, beyond the fact that she’s simply amazing? Her distinctive country-noir sound is as strong as ever on this swaying track, punctuated by a guitar solo that’s simultaneously twangy and ethereal. This is definitely an excellent track for a summer taking a turn down towards the overcast.
RIYL: The New Pornographers, Bright Eyes
08.20.2008 Download: "It's About Time" by Barcelona
The song seamlessly blends spaced-out guitar with bouncy piano. Once you get to the handclaps in the chorus, you’re deep in pop territory and will be happy to be there.
RIYL: Coldplay, Copeland

08.19.2008 Download: "I Ate Your Soul (ft. P Smoov)" by Grieves
It’s got a synth-heavy beat. It’s got a falsetto hook. It’s called “I Ate Your Soul.” And it features someone named P Smoov. Based on those facts, this is my favorite song ever. Then the rapping came in and it got even better. The delivery is very comfortable, almost like spoken-word, and entirely awesome.
RIYL: Brother Ali, Yacht
08.18.2008 Download: "I Don't Want To Turn You On" by The Hands
This song is gonna get ya dancing. It’s a garage-inspired punk rock song, with the signature crunchy guitars, the catchy-as-hell riffs, and even a horn section for good measure. I declare this song an official “Good Time Summer Jam.”
RIYL: The Hives, The Mooney Suzuki
08.15.2008 Download: "Big Rock Show" by Sweet Water
This is a big, mid-tempo sing-along, of that breed of late-‘90s power-pop that you hardly hear anymore. I firmly believe that the audience for this band will be instructed to “jump,” and they will happily comply. Get ready.
RIYL: Everclear, Weezer
08.14.2008 Download: "Across The River" by Shane Tutmarc & The Traveling Mercies
I feel like a campfire would be very conducive to me listening to this song. It toes the line between an intimately picked and strummed folk song and a full-scale hoedown with steady shuffling drums.
RIYL: Jenny Lewis, Rocky Votolato
08.13.2008 Download: "Jaundice Giraffe" by Feral Children
About a minute into the song, the singer’s scream came out of nowhere and nearly knocked me out of my chair. It’s a haunting meditation of keys and drums, with occasional guitar flourishes to produce a pretty atmospheric track of great experimental rock.
RIYL: Cursive, Discodrive

08.12.2008 Download: "Incredible" by Choklate
Choklate’s amazing voice has more than earned her to right to have the chorus “I am incredible” in this song. I couldn’t have put it any better. And I was not asked to, anyway.
RIYL: Blue Scholars, Estelle
08.11.2008 Download: "Ghosts In Our Clothes" By Black Eyes And Neckties
As soon as the haunted house keyboards give way to the dueling guitars, I know I’m ready for something awesome. then they up the ante with screamed, horror-themed vocals. I can’t wait to see these Bellingham locals rock some socks off.
RIYL: Schoolyard Heroes, The Russians, Murder City Devils
08.04.2008 Download: "If You Believe (You Will be Strong)" By Nino Moschella
This is a smooth, funky song. Wait, sorry, I misspelled that. I meant smooooooth. The vocals are raw, the guitar is delicious, and the keys are a welcome addition.
RIYL: Joss Stone, Macy Gray

07.28.2008 Download: "See These Bones" by Nada Surf
Swelling, soft, bubbly indie pop. This is what I like to hear.
Delicate guitar swirls together with smooth violins to create a
catchy, intimate song.
RIYL: Death Cab for Cutie, Band of Horses

07.21.2008 Download: "Om Baba" by Manooghi Hi
Whenever your album title ends in an exclamation like Manooghi Hi!, you know you’re in for some craziness. Surprise surprise, I was right, and I’m diggin’ it. Dancepunk drums and tambourines underscore the spacey Hindi vocals (that’s right, it’s in Hindi). Then the crunching guitars come in to drive home the point that this song is crazy (in the good way).
RIYL: The Octopus Project, Monotonix

07.14.2008 Download: "Uncle Sam Goddamn" by Brother Ali
This song is a serious paradox. It combines incredibly smooth relaxed delivery, with a scathing indictment of the US government. So smooth, it might be hard for me to politically mobilize when I’m so chilled out by the laid-back rapping. The beat is southern fried with its harmonica hooks (not a standard hip-hop device, but if this song is any indication, it should be).
RIYL: Snoop Dogg, Jurassic 5

06.30.2008 Download: "Alma Song" by PWRFL Power
“You are not that attractive, but something makes me feel that you’re going to be my girl” starts off this beautifully played acoustic track by Seattleite PWRFL Power, the unconventional, quirky and extremely talented singer songwriter. This is the first song I’ve ever heard that I could call a romantic comedy, and I love it.
RIYL: Belle and Sebastian, Sondre Lerche
06.23.2008 Download: "Sophisticated Honkey" by Orgone
If I were forced to classify this song in one word, it would be this: Funkalicious. This is a funky-ass instrumental jam, complete with horns and a sweet bass line; what more could you possibly want?
RIYL: Earth Wind and Fire, James Brown
06.16.2008 Download: "Time Without You" by Dale Watson
With bass vocals, slide guitar and fiddles, this song is honky-tonk-tastic. Dale Watson plays classic country music that’s at the very top of its game. A true original, Dale’s even coined his own genre: Ameripolitan (as he defines it on Wikipedia: original music with ‘prominent’ roots influence.) Note: This song may precipitate the purchase of boots.
RIYL: Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Hank Williams
06.09.2008 Download: "The Great Salt Lake" by Band of Horses
Another soaring, dreamy, indie gem from Sub Pop luminaries Band of Horses. This song is off their 2006 release Everything All the Time, not to be confused with their most recent effort, Cease to Begin, which has been flying off store shelves since October. Oh, yeah, also this song is awesome.
RIYL: The Shins, Siberian, Nada Surf

06.02.2008 Download: "White Dove" by John Vanderslice
After seeing John Vanderslice last year, I mistakenly thought of him as a soft balladeer. With the help of this song, and further listening to his catalog, I now have a completely different opinion. “White Dove” showcases a more bold, raw side of his songwriting that’s smart and catchy.

05.26.2008 Download: "Wild Mountain Nation" by Blitzen Trapper
This song makes me feel good, that’s all there is to it. It combines the blissful indie pop of a band like Of Montreal with the twangy southern rock of a band like Mountain. Obviously, go see this band at Bumbershoot. But only if you like fun.
RIYL: The bands I just mentioned…
