06.29.2009 Download: "Only as the Day is Long" by Sera Cahoone
This track from country-folk-indie darling Sera Cahoone is from her album with the same name, Only As the Day is Long. The Seattleite (by way of Colorado) offers heart-tugging lyrics and just the right amount of banjo and harmonica to give the track some twang. This is the kind of country for people who say they don’t listen to country.

06.26.2009 Ty Blue's Insider Look at Bumbershoot: June 21-27
Two ladies share the PR internship, conjoining their minds to tackle projects. Bumbershoot Insiders lovingly refer to Bailey and Alex as Bailex, or The Twins. On Thursday, one half of that dynamic duo (Alex) and I connected with Head Like a Kite for a recording session at an iconic Seattle studio. Dave and Trent have dynamo tracks already; keep tabs on these two because I suspect they’ll go far, and I’ll cherish these memories!
Speaking of going far, major props to everyone running the Seattle Rock & Roll Marathon this Saturday. When you breeze through 26.2 miles, think of me, the sprawled out fool gasping for breath way back at the .262-mile mark. Yeah, I’m not exactly athletic, so I’ll be planted at the Bumberbooth where I will be cheering for all you runners, walkers and mad-dashers. After you cross the finish line, stop by the booth and I’ll congratulate you with a Bumbershoot button!
The icing on the cake was today. John from Teatro ZinZanni, a.k.a. J-Flo, took me to the spiegeltent’s costume room to get FABOOSH for the Seattle Pride Parade on Sunday. And, I made my personal Pride playlist full of Bumbershoot artists with celebratory tracks that get me hyped and remind me of the gaiety in my life (listed below).
“Poster of Girl” – Metric
“Not a Love Song” – UH HUH HER
“Open Your Eyes” – U.S.E
“Monster Hospital” (MSTRKRFT remix) – Metric
“First Communion” – Gang Gang Dance
“Boom Boom Pow (David Guetta Remix) – The Black Eyed Peas
“Yeah Yeah” (Flosstradamus Remix) – Matt & Kim
“Milkshake” – Holy F**K
“Sophisticated Side Ponytail” – Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head

06.01.2009 Download: "Rio" by Hey Marseilles
This seven-dude band is a pop-genre experience in the folk music world. Their fan base may be small now, but I guarantee it’ll be sizable soon. Numerous sounds, such as gyspy-esque accordion and clapping, ground Hey Marseilles’ music, but the accompaniment of strings (bass, viola, mandolin (pimp!)) and extrospective lyrics give an astral sense to the band’s self-released full-length album To Travels and Trunks. Those characteristics especially shine through this track, “Rio”.

08.01.2008 Recommended If You Like: The Emerald City
You’ve already read about Bumbershoot’s international acts, flying in from all over the universe to play this year, that’s a given. But what about our distinctive hometown heroes? (Yeah, when I said The Emerald City I was talking about Seattle, not The Wizard of Oz. Sorry.) The much-lauded Seattle sound will be at Bumbershoot in force, and with a little guidance, you can be in the front row for every fresh local act.
I’ll start with some local punk. We’ve got the pop-punk upstarts Speaker Speaker this year, embodying what one critic called a “nosebleed on overdrive” as best they know how. They’ll be alongside Bellinghamsters Black Eyes and Neckties (yeah, they’re from Bellingham, but I’m claiming them local, okay?), who are known not only for their kinetic live shows and spoooooky subject matter (like ghosts and werewolves and whatnot), but also for their black eye makeup (oh – and neckties). Perhaps there’s a connection… but I’m no Miss Marple, so I won’t worry about it too much. I’ll just file that under C for coincidence.
We’ve also got local indie kids Throw Me The Statue playing this year. They play just that perfect brand of fresh-faced pop to take home and introduce to your family. You know, some music that’ll treat you right for a change and make you happy. You deserve it! Check out this video of them playing “Lolita” on a Washington State Ferry while apparently completely freezing (can you blame them, seriously?).
Okay, so you knew I was going to have to get to this band, obviously if I’m talking about awesome local things… 4 words: Death Cab For Cutie (OMG!). That was my basic reaction when I heard they were added to our lineup. Not just added, but they are closing the entire festival on the Samsung Mobile Mainstage. Man, their bass player Nick has come a long way from being a garbage man in Tacoma (that’s right, I did research). Fun fact: I personally believe that somewhere around 60% of college students have a copy of Transatlanticism, and that is a conservative estimate. They mail it out with your acceptance letter. It is also the perfect album to listen to on the bus while you pretend to be in a music video. Not that I’ve ever done that.
So if you’re going for Seattle flavor, you can’t go wrong with Seattle School (it has Seattle right in the name). And to sweeten the pot, they are performing their show RECESSION! about a J-pop band trying to rescue America from our “macroeconomic frownzies” so we start spending money again. Seattle School also won The Stranger’s Genius award, ensuring a show that is not only awesome, but actually genius.
So now Seattle gets to share its sweet arts with the rest of the world, through Bumbershoot, in exchange for the world giving us their best acts for the Festival (you know I’m looking at you, Sondre Lerche. Answer my letters!). I say it’s a fair trade.

The one-two closing punch of “Die for Your Government>Power to the Peaceful” puts an appropriate stamp on the night with another raging anti-war screed followed by a call to arms for non-violent revolution… It’s not one of the longer sets seen at the Fillmore this year, but it’s certainly one of the most intense and most political.

06.12.2008 Beck's Modern Guilt has cover art, tracklist and release date
It’s a big day for Beck fans. Stereogum shares the tracklist and cover art for Modern Guilt, out July 8.
Last week, Beck revealed to EW.com the thinking behind the retro-inspired cover:
The photo’s really funny… My engineer, who’s also a photographer, was just testing the camera and took a picture of legs. I think it’s me, and somebody else who was there. And the floor. Everything else was so album cover, you know what I mean? I love throwaway covers. Seems like they did that a lot more in the ’70s. There’ll just be a shot, like, in the corner of the room. You know, it so obviously isn’t a cover that it just makes it a great cover.

05.30.2008 Recommended If You Like: Punk
Punk rock is a pretty elusive concept. Is it just driving guitars, two-count drums, propulsive bass, and yelled lyrics? Or is it something more… something indefinable… something I don’t feel like looking up on Wikipedia right now? Probably, I have no idea.
But if you happen to be aware of what punk is, exactly, or if you’re like me and think it’s just this abstract mystery that produces awesome music, then Bumbershoot is sure to please this year. We’ve got artists to please every level of the punk spectrum, from the new generation of jelly-bracelet wearing upstarts, to the dudes wearing studded jackets who are always surprisingly nice to me on the bus.
The Popular
This year we’re very excited to have one of the most popular punk bands around: Paramore. In case you’ve been hiding in a cave like some kind of punk rock hermit, the youthful Paramore, with their spritely lead singer (who may or may not be old enough even to smoke), have been rocketing up the charts and claiming coveted spots on the Warped Tour and now Bumbershoot.
The Classic
Perhaps the most straightforward punk band at the Festival this year is Anti-Flag, known for their politically charged lyrics. Take a wild guess as to their political affiliation with songs like “The WTO Kills Farmers” and “The Press Corpse.” Combine that with a new album called War Sucks, Let’s Party, and you know you’re going to have fun (and might just learn something too, if you’re not careful).
The Underground
Now, onto the next progressive stage of this ever-cutting edge genre. Hailing from Israel, Monotonix make punky, dancey, good time jams. Just check out one of their ass-shaking live performances on YouTube if you don’t believe me. I’ll wait. Pretty crazy, right?
Or if you want to keep it in the family, as it were, come support local heroes These Arms Are Snakes, with their experimental punk rock that’s as heavy as it is catchy. If you’ve never seen them live, you’re severely missing out on a positively electric, insane live performance. Jaws will drop, I guarantee it.
The Literature
And for the bookish punk in you, Bumbershoot has ya covered. Check out Joshua Furst talking about his most recent book, The Sabotage Café, about a girl who leaves her stifling suburban existence to squat with a group of anarchists. I’m sorry, but if that’s not punk rock, then nothing is.
This is just the tip of the black, studded iceberg of punk at this year’s Festival, and we’re going to announce even more in the coming weeks. Seriously, you punks have got it made this year.

Looking back, what is your favorite festival memory?
All the festivals last year seemed to be our favorites. I think we finally figured it out after a couple of years of playing festivals. We learned how to play outdoors, in the sunlight, 50 people away from the nearest person and not let that get in the way of trying to relate to the audience. We used to pretend like we are in 300 person room, but that doesn’t quite work. I am not really sure what it is, but you have to compensate a little bit.

06.13.2007 Roky Erickson Film - Showing in August!
Beside the long awaited Roky Erickson and The Explosives
show at Bumbershoot (Monday September 3), there will also be a showing of a new documentary on Roky’s life a few days before! Here’s some info:
August 24-30, Fri – Thurs at 7 & 9:15 PM (plus Sat & Sun at 3 & 5 PM) at Northwest Film Forum (1515 12th Ave., Seattle).
Keven McAlester says of his award winning documentary, “I started out thinking I was making One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, but I ended up with something more like Being There.” Shot by cinematographer Lee Daniel (_Slacker_, Dazed and Confused, Before Sunset), the film tells the story of Austinite Roky Erickson, undeniably one of the greatest singer-songwriter, guitar player and harmonica-wailers of all time, and Janis Joplin’s chief influence. The singer and founding member of the 13th Floor Elevators was talented but unpredictable. After entering an insanity plea in 1969 for a marijuana arrest, Roky was sent to a mental hospital for three years where he was surrounded by the worst violent and mentally ill criminals. To the great dismay of his fans, he became a recluse. Featuring interviews with Billy Gibbons, Thurston Moore, and Patti Smith, You’re Gonna Miss Me is a devastating exploration of the life of one of rock’s most infamously tragic figures.

05.18.2007 Discovered: Band Bio Generator 1.0
The Back Story:
In an effort to cut rising production costs, a prominent music magazine recently hired a team of super-scientists to accomplish one goal and one goal alone: design a tool that would replace music critics for good. For eight weeks the scientists slaved away in an underground bunker living off nothing but toaster strudels and string cheese. Finally, they had it – The Band Bio Generator – an instrument so powerful that it was quickly buried by the United States government. Or was it? After hearing rumors of the technology, Bumbershoot sent out an exploratory unit to track it down and bring it to the masses. Many interns were lost in the effort to acquire the device, but their sacrifice lives on. So the next time you use the generator, remember their rallying cry: Use it. Love it. Share it.
