Short Stories Live, a semi-monthly series curated by ACT Artistic Director Kurt Beattie and presented at Town Hall, takes up residence at Bumbershoot with work by two of the best local writers: Rebecca Brown ("Junk Mail") and Ryan Boudinot ("New Holly"). The program features professional actors giving dramatic readings of great short literature, and is directed and hosted by Beattie.
Rebecca Brown
Rebecca Brown is the author of a dozen books of prose including The Last
Time I Saw You, The End Of Youth, The Dogs, The Terrible Girls (City Lights) and The Gifts Of The Body (HarperCollins). A frequent collaborator, she has written numerous texts for dance; a play, "The Toaster;" and Woman In Ill Fitting Wig, a book-length collaboration with painter Nancy Kiefer. She recently co-edited, with Mary Jane Knecht, an anthology of writers' responses to work at the Frye Art Museum. American Romances, Brown's collection of gonzo essays, is forthcoming from City Lights.

Boudinot is the author of The Littlest Hitler, a collection of short stories, and Sperm & Egg, a novel forthcoming on Counterpoint. His work has appeared in The Best American Nonrequired Reading, McSweeney's, Black Book, The Stranger and elsewhere. He is on the faculty at Goddard College's Port Townsend MFA program.

Beattie is the Artistic Director at Seattle's renowned ACT Theatre and has numerous directing credits there and at Seattle's other major theatres. Nationally he has directed at Milwaukee Repertory Theatre, the Alley Theatre in Houston, and the Ojai Playwrights Festival. As an actor he has appeared in leading and major roles at ACT, Seattle Rep, Intiman, and The Empty Space, as well as many regional theatres throughout the country.
